Wensum Valley Golf & Country Club

Day 1

Suffolk v Bedfordshire

The first day of the junior county match week saw some great golf from  a very young Suffolk squad.Captain Georgia Parker who gained ladies 1st team experience earlier in the season was first out and after halving the first hole with birdies she never looked back. With the match under control until an errant tee shot at fifteen let her opponent back into the match, going down the eighteenth hole one up Georgia hit a great shot from 180 yards to the back of the green and the match was won 2up. The rest of the team has a little less experience than the captain and struggled to keep pace with their far more experienced opponents from Bedfordshire. Rio Everitt enjoyed a close match on the front 9 with a birdied half on the par 5 first, but lost three holes on the bounce on the back nine to finally lose on the 16th. Sophie Kubitzek,Juliette Coffey and Natasha Gregory all making their debut appearances played some very good golf and gained some great experience from their more experienced playing partners.Jessica Buck did very well to take her match to the fourteenth.

Day 2(AM)

Suffolk v Essex

A chilly wind greeted the players on the second day of Junior County match week.

The dependable Georgia Parker led the team out against Millie Penfold and was soon into her stride with a 180 yard approach at 5 to 2 feet for eagle, a close match all the way saw Georgia unfortunately lose the last to finish all square.

Rio Everitt was always up against it against Maura Burns-Zaragoza  going down early, the middle holes saw Rio pull back a few holes back but her opponent ended up winning on the 15th  4 & 3.

Sophie Kubitzek had a very close match with Ciara Rushmer, no more than two holes in it all the way round, Sophie forced the match to go down the last after winning the uphill 17th. Unfortunately Sophie played the wrong ball on 18 to lose the match 2 Down.

Juliette Coffey had a good match against Romy Bozier being down then pulling back to level at 11 and then again at 13, before Romy pulled out a lead and won 3 & 2.

Laura Eaden another junior making her debut this week was understandably a little nervous on the first tee. Laura enjoyed her match with Emma Nagler but unfortunately her more experienced opponent was too strong. Ending up with a 7 & 5 loss.

Natasha Gregory put her loss of yesterday behind her playing against Errin Earle, some exceptional golf, and was soon 2 up after 8 and a great putt from fifteen feet at 11 which rattled into the hole for birdie helped to put Gregory 4 up after 13. A stellar performance by one of the younger members of the team winning on the 16th by 3 & 2.

Day 2 (PM)

The afternoon saw a stern test against the vastly experienced Norfolk Side.

Georgia found it hard against Chloe Gibbs going 6 down at one stage but managed to claw it back to finally miss out on the 16th green 4&2.

Sophie Kubitzek was not at her best against Hope Neild and was soon finshed on the 11th green.

Juliette Coffey struggled to keep pace with Maisie Farrelly and went down 4 & 3.

Jessica Buck played some good golf on the front 9, but fell away slightly against a more experienced Chloe Tarbard ending up with a 6 & 5 loss.

Natasha Gregory played very well again after her morning victory but was unable to force a second win of the day, losing on the 16th green to Polly Norman 3 & 2.

Jasmine Points was the last player and the youngest squad member at 12 to make her debut and she didn’t disappoint.

Playing some exceptional golf holding a close match all the way around and finally  taking Ruby Patterson  down the 18th after winning 17 to go all square. Unfortunately Jasmine came up short with her approach to the par 5 and her opponent holed a 6 foot putt to steal away a half point. Her opponent’s handicap being some 14 shots better than Jasmine’s, was a great performance from Jasmine.

Day 3(AM)

Suffolk v Cambs & Hunts

Georgia Parker once again had a great match that went the full distance and ended up being a halved match with Alex Sparrow. Highlight of the round was a great shot at the par 3 thirteenth to two feet and a tap in birdie to go 2up at the time.

Rio Everitt had another exiting match against Lucy Pepper. 1 down after 6 she turned it around to be 1 up after 10. In the end Lucy got the better of Rio winning 2 & 1.

Jessica Buck was always up against it against Morgan Tritton going 4 down early on, finally losing 6 & 5.

Laura Eaden had a close encounter with Olivia Dyson. She was 2up after 10 thanks to a great shot to two feet to set up a birdie two. But the second nine at Wensum is tricky with lots of hazards and the more experienced Olivia was able to claw it back and overturn the lead that Laura had, finally winning on sixteen 3 & 2.

Natasha Gregory started where she had finished on day two and birdied the par 5 first hole on her way to a three hole lead after five holes. And it got better, as a three hole lead turned into a five hole advantage after 11. A little bit of a wobble on the next few holes saw Natasha Bamford pull a few holes back but the Suffolk youngster was back on it and held on to win 3 & 2.

Jasmine Points playing her second match of the week struggled against Jessica Hollingworth’s distance and was soon three down by the 5th hole. But Jasmine is a fighter and after being 4 down at 11 she could have folded. Digging deep Jasmine managed to take the match to the 16th finally running out losing 3 & 2. But Jasmine can hold her head high after her two matches this week for someone so young to play like she did this week. Well done Jasmine great stuff.

Day 3(PM)

Suffolk v Hertfordshire

With some weary legs amongst the girls and the rain hammering down it was not the time to be playing the side which won County match days.

But the Suffolk team represented the County with great fight. Georgia Parker was soon two up after two holes thanks to a birdie on the first against Emanuelle Hewson. Hewson soon found her stride and was two up by the 10th and Georgia was finding it tough to get it back and ran out of holes at 16 losing 3 & 2.

Rio Everitt had a great match against the Herts captain Ellie Farwell the match ebbed and flowed each way with no more than one hole in it.  By the time Rio rolled a 20 foot put in at 14 to go all square again the match was destined to go down 18. On the 18th green Rio’s put slid past the hole and Ellie’s put from ten feet was holed for a win 1up a great match to finish the week.

Sophie Kubitzek had a close first seven holes with Maddie Rolf all square after seven holes. But Maddie found a different gear after half way and raced into a three hole lead after 14 and there was no way back for Sophie. Result Sophie lost 4 & 3.

The last three matches were not so close with Natasha Gregory, Jessica Buck and Juliette Coffey all losing with holes to spare, but with such little county experience between them they were up against it as well as the appalling weather conditions. So much so the Suffolk match, which was out first, was the only game to finish with the referees halting play behind as the water engulfed the course and flooded the greens.

All in all a great experience for our young team, I’m sure we will be a lot stronger next year in our own county too.
